History

Thai Massage and Thai Medicine are said to have been founded by the legendary Shivago Komarpaj, a physician from over 2500 years ago. He was from northern India and said to be a friend and personal physician of the Buddha.

Most of the recorded history of Thai massage was lost in 1767 during the Burmese attack in Ayutthia. There were records that survived and were inscribed in the Sala Moh Nuat, a massage pavilion in Bangkok.

Following World War II Thailand became a popular place for tourists, making Thai massages a world-known technique. It reached the United States in the late 1980s.

Philosophy

Thai massage's Buddhist background elevates it to such a high level that it is regarded as a perfect spiritual practice in Thailand for it exemplifies the four divine states of mind taught in Buddhism. These are metta, goodwill, loving-kindness; karuna, compassion, the desire to help others; mudita, sympathetic joy, gladness for the good fortune of others; and upekkha, impartiality or equanimity. The following words by The Dalai Lama describing Tibetan medicine could actually be used to perfectly describe Thai massage, “Tibetan medicine is deeply integrated with Buddhist practice and theory which stresses the indivisible interdependence of mind, body, and vitality. The ideal doctor is one who combines sound medical understanding with a strong realization of wisdom and compassion. ”

Breath Work

BREATHE DEEPLY
The passive stretching you receive in a Thai Massage session is oftentimes deeper than you can extend into in a yoga class or on your own. This is because here you can completely relax into it… simply breathe and let go. Similar to yoga, Thai Massage incorporates the use of breath to gently move deeper… Primarily, smoothing out and elongating the breath tells the nervous system that it’s ok to just chill out. The reward of breath focus is a profoundly relaxed body and peaceful state of mind.

Intelligent Sequencing

Though there are numerous sequences that can be performed during a traditional Thai massage, it is important to intuit your movements with your client. Not all stretches or compressions are meant for everybody. I believe that each individual body will let you know what they can work with, what is too much and to back off or when you can go a bit deeper. Listening is the key to bringing your client to a state of peace and calm with a sense of openness and alignment within their energy body.

Thai massage has been an eye-opening practice that has allowed me to manipulate my body in ways that truly allow it to ask for what it needs. Deb’s technique are full body but your mind and your soul get worked as well. The movement of energy throughout your body will leave you feeling in tune and allow you to feel where you need to do work. I cannot recommend this body work enough!!!

My Journey to Thailand…

I was fortunate enough to have traveled in February of 2020 to Thailand (the place where Thai Massage originated). My Thai Yoga teacher, David Roma, asked if I would like to be his yoga and meditation teacher for a retreat he was hosting at Ohm Waters. It was an intention that was on my vision board the year before. It felt like spirit was looking down on me saying yes, it’s time! What a sacred place… Om Waters is a floating Ashram in Srilanna National Park, just north of Chiang Mai. The native people and their culture are genuine, kind, and loving, They are happy you are there, visiting their beautiful country. They let you know that every day in the way they greet you, through how they prepare their food, offering transportation or sharing the history of their most sacred land. I realized that this was an incredible opportunity to learn, grow and become aware of how I move through this world. I came home with so much!

David’s 30-hour Thai Training over 8 days of giving and receiving Thai Massage was no less than pure bliss. Eating the most amazing vegetarian meals I had ever tasted and sleeping under the stars at night was truly magical. I couldn’t wait to share with all my clients, family, and friends. Yet, within a week of arriving home, we were in lockdown due to Covid 19. As all of us have realized during this time of isolation and reflection, it is more important than ever to create and live the life of your dreams. That is what I hope to do, to return to Thailand again and again, to experience the beauty and opportunities for deep growth that this country has to offer.
