Intention

The intention behind Trauma-Informed Yoga is to support students as they regain comfort and connection to their bodies, emotions, and thoughts. It counteracts rumination and improves self-regulation. In TIY, I support students as they begin to notice what is happening inside their bodies. This return to embodiment is shown to reduce nervous system arousal and increase the window of tolerance.

Trauma Informed Yoga

Breath Work

The goal of Breath Work Therapy is to support students in achieving a greater sense of self-awareness and capacity for healing. Conscious Breathing also supports so many of the challenges that are a result of trauma. It can reduce stress, it creates a feeling of openness and connection to one’s self. Breath Work also helps to calm the central nervous system, open physical or emotional blocks as well as reduce anxiety, depression, fear, or anger.

Postures

The postures or shapes that are involved in a Trauma-Informed Yoga class are chosen specifically for the safety and comfortability of the student. They are used to support increased Vagal Tone, support Heart Rate Variability. In addition, these shapes help to foster resourcing and promote resiliency as well as Conscious Relaxation.

Is TIY For You?

TIY allows students to experience agency and control. In this way, students experience empowerment, self-efficacy, and the possibility of living a life no longer defined by their trauma symptoms. This modality of body movement supports grounding, learning how to resource, regulating effect, and the nervous system. TIY encourages the experience of the present moment and interoception.

Mindful Meditation

Meditation practices can promote personal healing and support recovery from trauma. Practicing Mindful Meditation is a resource toward empowering oneself, toward self-regulation. In this type of meditation, the student is paying attention to the thoughts as they pass through the mind, simply taking note and observing any patterns. Students find it helpful to focus on the breath while observing mindfulness.

Intelligent Sequencing

In this TIY Yoga Class, the focus is on presenting the students options throughout the practice. There are invitations to be curious, to notice, to observe, and to investigate. A class usually begins with orienting within your own personal space by becoming aware of your breath by scanning the body. As the class progresses different shapes are demonstrated to open up the energetic pathways in the body bringing present moment awareness.

What People Are Saying

I found Deborah’s approach to be supportive and heart-centered. She has worked with me taking small steps, helping me feel comfortable in my body for the first time in years. She helped me let go of the idea that, “I can’t start this at my age!” I have made real progress in these past few months.

TIY has made a huge difference in my journey toward feeling self-empowered. I can now sit with whatever is going on internally and create an allowing space by simply bringing attention to my breathing. This alone allows me to feel calmer and more centered.

— Cass B (client of TIY)

We do not care what a shape looks like on the outside; we are interested in what it feels like inside.
